This is what we’ve all been waiting for. I never lost hope. I’ll be staying in touch for sure. And now, I invoke Merriam-Webster’s word of 2007…”w00t”!
Very exciting, best entertainment news of the year. Looks like that previous letter-writing campaign paid off!
Is it 2010 yet??
thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU!!! i can’t wait…
2 Hobbit movies? Will they end the first with the escape from the Wood Elves or go all the way through the Battle of 5 Armies? And will part 2 be a completely different sequel accounting for Thorin’s Father in the Necromancer’s Fortress in Mirkwood, and several side stories from the Hobbitt? I am rather curious at to plot synopsis of both…….and I can’t wait!
I almost fell over reading this. Great news! I knew they couldn’t do it without PJ.
Best movie news I’ve heard this year or last! I’m thinking they end the first movie with the capture and imprisonment in Mirkwood.
&^%$@#!!!! WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO SAY?
CANT DO IT WITHOUT P.J! YOUR THE MAN! IM GOING TO SLEEP UNTIL THE DAY ARRIVES….zZzZ
i can’t wait!!! this movie and metal gear will be anthology!!
Peter Jackson must direct!
All I can say is THANK YOU to MGM, New Line and the Genius - Peter Jackson. Thank you for granting everyone’s wish to see this masterpiece brought to life. But Peter MUST direct and Sir Ian along with Andy Serkis must be brought back
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!! OK now thats out of my system , can we start begging Peter Jackson to direct now?
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT SINCE 2003! WHAT GREAT NEWS. HOPE THERE WILL BE PRODUCTION DIARIES ONLINE BEFORE THE RELEASE OF THE FILM. SO HAPPY TO HAVE PETER AND FRAN INVOLVED. IT WILL BE ANOTHER MAJOR FILM EVENT!
I read on aintitcool.com that the sequel will be a bridge to the fellowship and be based on ancillary Tolkien work. I personally hope we see something somewhere that has gandalf dealing with the witch king. i know he disappears for while in the hobbit and does so. it would be cool.
AT LAST!!
All is right with the world.
W00H00.. T!!
I was in an elevator coming back from lunch when I read the TV screen in the elevator say Jackson was back! Wow! I truly believe in karma. Lately, I’ve been picking up my old tattered Tolkien books and rereading them each night. My wife found it really strange since this is very unlike me. Not sure what was making me do this. I truly believe this was a sign!!!
Also one last thing: no Sam Raimi!!! No offense, don’t want to see Bruce Campbell make an appearance in Middle Earth!
Remember that on the LotR trilogy Peter Jackson wasn’t present at a lot of the filming sites, other directors were doing the actual “directing” but following very specific guidlines.
No matter who directs the look and feel will stay PJ’s I’m certain, with an added personal touch, hopefully ending up as a result as good as what Lawrence Kasdan for “The Empire Strikes Back” since most fans agree it is the best of all the Star Wars films.
I’m glad he saved those 40 containers of props, set pieces, and costumes from the previous films, they will give the Hobbit the proper continuity. Of course this also means WETA will do the CGI and effects work.
The one thing I hope happens is thet they can get Alan Lee and John Howe on board as well.
Frodan
I read that Britney Spears has been cast to play Bombur!
That’s hot as well as fierce…
[To the moderator:]
How could you delete this comment?
It isn’t even remotely offensive, get a sense of humor, at least I’ve read the books!
Best birthday present I’ve gotten since the release of The Return of the King. Huzzah!
I’m a very happy little hobbit right now. *g*
Folks, call me crazy but I really wish they would script and shoot the “Scouring of the Shire” and re-release it with the “Return of the King” as an extended version DVD. That way, they would finish the trilogy on film as it was so wonderfully finished in the book. I know it’s a pipe dream of mine, yeah, I’m crazy. Oh well, it;s just terrific that he’s going to make The Hobbit!
wait, i’m a little unclear, is Jackson going to “direct” the Hobbit, or is someone else going to direct and Jackson and Walsh are just going to produce? PLEASE CLEAR THIS UP FOR ME!!!!
Woot, I just finished watching the Extended ROTK again (I’m off ill from work) and they announce this … Thank you NL, thank you MGM and mostly thank you Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh … We all know you will do us proud, GL with the Project!
This is great news. The two movies will probably be the “Core” Book and the White Council storyline added in, since that is what Gandalf was doing at the time of his absence from the group. Hopefully we’ll see the same actors for Gandalf, Elrond, Galadriel and Celeborn.
Nobody knows anything yet other than the press releases. It says that PJ and Fran are going to be the exec producers but does not say they are only going to be the EP’s. It is made to sound as if there will be a different director but all of this is only speculation as there is no other hard information. So no one can really clear this up for you Chris.
PLEASE PJ, NO 3D! PLEASE!!!!!!!
you guys could think about discword by terry pratchett, color of magic, fantastic light are great books, i’d love watch rincewind and twoflower, and, peter directing.
Just think, we are going to be discussing this for the NEXT 3 YEARS!!!! Here’s to all the best intentions reaching fruition….
Can the Hobbits be persuaded to produce an RSS feed for the blog?
THAT`S SO FANTASTIC … so finally the saga got it’s own prequel!!!
All I can say is YAHOOOOOOOO! As long as PJ and Fran are involved in some manner, all is well…. what about WETA? I hope they will be a major part of things as well! Oh, this has made my day!
Howdy
This is my favorite book. I’ve been waiting for years! Peter Jackson should is the only person who could make this happen. JRR would be proud!
Yes, PJ to direct is great. He did a great job of deleting non-essential storylines (Bombadill, and yes, the Shire scouring).
Is it too early to stand in line for The Hobbit? Christmas definitely came early for me.
OMG!!!!! I can’t wait until 2010… I don’t like time going fast… but because of this movie I can (and I want to) do an exception!!!!
This is good news right before christmas. Maby the date was choosen as a little present for the fans, jus as the LOTR movies was released as a great present the previous years.
A comment on deleting non-essential storylines; Bombadil actually saved the hobbits lives at the barrows, so totally non-essential can’t we call Mr Bombadil.
While I dance for joy, I have a few reservations…
* this ’sequel’ I would hope would follow the hobbit storyline.
* I hope they’ve secured the same actors for these movies, otherwise it may struggle.
Here’s to carrying my Tolkien around like a holy tome again!
Thank God they all solved their differences for the good sake of everyone.
And finally, the dream will come true. This is the miracle that saved Christmas.
I amar prestar aen. Han mathon ne nen. Han mathon ne chae. A han noston ned gwilith.
Great news finally. Let’s hope PJ let’s himself be “persuaded” to direct after all. But the main thing is that the the Hobbiton/Misty Mountains sets and locations are resurrected. With all the elaborate makeup of LOTR, not just IK/Gandalf but many of the other LOTR actors could pre-incarnate in as relations/ancestors of earlier times too. eg RD/Gimli- Gloin
Lawdy I’m delighted. Having my favorite childhood books finally come to life may well have saved me from slitting my wrists at a bad time in my life. This is just the right thing to keep me bouncing along.
Someone mentioned Terry Pratchett. I was up late and caught ‘Hogfather’ on a local station. Checked up and it was made in 2006 and released utterly without fanfare.
i don’t know why your are all so happy Peter isn’t directing only producing there is a BIG friggin difference, this is not good news but the worst i have gotten all year. i want to cry
i don’t want some other directing trying to copy Peter, it won’t be the same or look the same
Great! We discussed on this topic a month ago in the flimmerblog.de. Maybe you wanna join the discussion? Peter Jackson has to be the director of this flick!!
Merry Christmas to us all!
What a wonderful gift this news is.
I knew this had to be made with Peter’s involvement. No one else could bring this to life like he could. No one should be allowed to touch it without his involvement.
I think I shall reread the books starting now!
I think Hogfather was made for Sky TV (aka some Fox subsidiary) for the UK, it was shown last christmas, you couldn’t escape ads for it for about 2 months prior to it showing. No idea why they wouldn’t promote the hell out of it in the U.S.
HAPPY DANCE!!! I am over the moon ecstatic about this FINALLY coming though. I’ve been waiting impatiently for the stupid money dispute to end so the movies could be made.
I really hope that they get the same actors for the characters as they had in LotR
And I’m curious as to how Peter plans to break it up into two different movies, where shall the split be?
but aaaah, more happy dance of GLEE, this is the best possible gift
I am super excited about this. My only questions is with 2 films, are they splitting the Hobbit into 2 or are they doing the Hobbit and then what happened after the Hobbit and before Lord of the Rings?
PETER, PLEASE DIRECT IT! PLEASEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
woot! indeed!
Wow! I’ve been looking at the lordoftherings.net website for ever waiting to hear this piece of news. It seems weird that the first movie wiwll premiere 9 years after The Fellowship. Now I’m feeling old. But hey, great way to end the year.
Wohhhh!!! Great notice.
But Peter Jacson needs to be director to.
Please New Line and MGM .
Wonderful news. After seeing what Jackson and WETA did with a Balrog in Moria I can’t what to see what is done by them with Smaug.
Funny, everytime I eat apples and cheese I think of “barrels out of bond.”
Now, onto the fierce debate about the actors.
Weeeeeee!!
How exciting Ive been waiting sense 2003 everyone. MERRY CHRISTMAS
great news! I always dreaded that they would push on with the project without PJ. Hope Sir Ian Mckellen and Sir Ian Holm are coming back for their respective roles.
This will probably be wonderful. Sounds like magic, I just wish Jackson would be directing although exective producer is good. I think if he directed the film the project would be even better. It would give us what we really want to see. Jackson’s work on The Return of the King is unrivaled as far as moviemaking.
Best news I have heard in a very long time! I too would love to have PJ direct but having him involved in any part of it is great news. I am sure he will make sure that the movies have the same ‘flavor’ as the Trilogy did. I love the Hobbit and very happy they are making it into a movie. It will be a treasured part of my collection someday and I expect I will be reading my copy again very soon!
Is Jackson going to “skip” over Beorn just like he “skipped” over Tom Bombadil? I mean, there are some magical, primal people in Tolkien’s Middle Earth that even Gandalf does not fully understand, that add even more mystery and magic. It was a shame Bombadil (along with the episode in the Old Forest with Old Man Willow)was skipped in the LOTR (I did not miss the singing, mind you). The Beorn episode is a lot shorter, quite funny (with the dwarves coming in by twos) and scary, so he has no excuse. Besides, he’s dividing the book into two movies by the sounds of it, so has no excuse!
Hooray! I’ve been so waiting for The Hobbit and for Peter Jackson to do it. I was starting to despair that it would never come about and/or that Jackson wouldn’t be given the film.
I have been waiting for this news ever since I finished watching the credits roll on ROTK. I can’t wait to see what Mr Jackson can do with the Hobbit.
Like so many here - this news has been like the arrival of a “long awaited party”. I was like so many others - thinking that a dream opportunity had been lost if Peter Jackson had not been involved in the prequel.
I agree with the comment about “Lawrence Kasdan” and his direction of the Empire Strikes back - so don’t despair people. I don’t believe Peter J would take this on if he wasnt sure HIS and Fran’s vision wasnt the one hitting the screen.
But - if Peter J IS reading these comments, if we all beg him really nicely - with lots of promises of DVD residuals - he might just give in and direct it for us…those of us who simply want his hands on the tiller till we reach the havens….
I’m very excited. I hope Peter will direct both movies …. awwww .. can’t wait till 2010 :>
I’m glad Peter and New Line made a deal. There’s been alot of bad sequels and prequels these past few years. I’m hoping for an amazing movie with The Hobbit and I don’t want to be let down! I know the only way for that to happen is, PETER JACKSON HAS TO DIRECT THE HOBBIT!! These two films should have the feel and the look of Peter’s style
We’re not out of the woods yet, directors make or break films! The only way I think to asure a victiory for these films is to only and I mean only to have Jackson direct!!!
I’m glad Peter and New Line made a deal. There’s been alot of bad sequels and prequels these past few years. I’m hoping for an amazing movie with The Hobbit and I don’t want to be let down! Great news! Can’t wait to see Smaug, the Necromancer, Beorn, Thorin, the Lonely Mountain and Lake Town come to life on the big screen! No one but PJ could make this happen!
thanks.good news.ım very very happy
GREAT NEWS! I WANT PETER JACKSON TO DIRECT THO!!! EVEN THO EXECUTIVE PRODUCE CAN MEAN SO MANY THINGS…HE COULD STILL DIRECT AND TAKE OVER THE WHOLE PROCESS. BUT WHY WOULD YOU GIVE THE TITLE OF ALL YOUR WORK TO SOMEONE ELSE??? YEA I THINK NOT. IM NERVOUS, HOPEFULLY ALL THE SAME ACTORS RETURN…I MEAN TO SEE ANOTHER BILBO BAGGINS THEN THE ONE WHO HAD BEEN IN THE LOTR WOULD BE EXTREMLY TACKY!
I WANT PETER TO DIRECT. ALAN LEE AND JOHN HOWE! WETA…EVERYONE FROM THE ORIGINAL MOVIES…
IM REALLY HOPING THIS WONT BE A DISAPOINTMENT. BUT IT CERTAINLY IS GOOD NEWS PJ ND MGM RESOLVED THEIR DIFFERENCES AND ARE GOING THROUGH WITH THE HOBBIT.
I’m really happy this has been settled in my lifetime ;->
I was so aggravated by New Line that I started the boycottnewline.com site 13 months ago. haven’t seen any new New Line movies in over a year. Yesterday, I was delighted to turn this into an archive site, and I plan to go see The Golden Compass this afternoon.
So thanks to New LIne and Jackson and MGM for working together to bring this most excellent project to the screen.
2 movies eh? Hmm, that’ll be an interesting one.
PJ not actually directing scares me a little… but as long as he’s involved at all, it can only be a good thing.
It says Peter Jackson is producing, who is directing?!!!!! Please tell me it’s P.J.
This news is wonderful. I’m almost thinking they put it out a bit early, though. I feel like I’ve cheated and opened a present before 25 December!
Now, let’s hope they keep the same writing team as for LotR. Fran and Phillippa were great.
Wonder if the results from Golden Compass pushed New Line to some common sense and compromise?
Wooohoooo!
The board is set, the pieces are moving!
AAAAAaaaaaghhhh!!!! Yahooo!
I don’t care how nerdy this makes me sound, but I finally have a movie to really look forward to seeing. Ever since ROTK left cinemas, there’s just been nothing I’ve really anticipated. I’ve enjoyed a lot of movies, even looked forward to them - but I’ve not gotten really excited about one since the LOTR films came to an end.
I’ll have to keep 2010 and 2011 clear >_>
My teacher read us “The Hobbit” in fifth grade, about 1972. It opened me up to the universe of fantasy, and I went on to devour the Trilogy as well as other epics such as Frank Herbert’s Dune series. I’m very happy to see that PJ and NewLine will make the Hobbit; still, I’m concerned about how they plan to split the story into two. After all, the book wasn’t as long as any one of the three books in the Trilogy, and they managed to encapsulate each of them in a single film. So what’s the plan? When will we know more about the mysteriously unnamed sequel? Who’s going to portray Gandalf? And how freaking cool will it be to see Smaug in all his ancient, jewel-encrusted glory?

I am afraid that because Jackson is not directing, that his name as producer may just be a rubber stamp on the project and he may only be earning a payday this time around. Don’t get me wrong. I think Jackson is a genius. I’m just disappointed to hear he isn’t directing. Does anyone know if somebody else is slated to direct?
Doubt plays at the edges of my mind. I am afraid that if Jackson doesn’t direct, it won’t matter that he is producing. You just won’t get the hands-on involvement Peter Jackson and the movie might not have what it takes to shine.
It’s like George Lucas producing those “other” Star Wars movies that nobody likes. Though did he EVER direct the original episodes?
These movies will make money, but will they end up like the more recent Star Wars movies…laughable, pale shadows of the originals?
This is awesome!
Peter Jackson must direct!
I am unbelievably stoked about this news…but a bit leery to hear that PJ won’t be directing. I understand he’s busy, but if he’s going to do the Hobbit, how can he not direct? Let’s ask him to put the other projects on hold. lol
Or maybe we can wait…but not too long.
Wow. you people are really scared about this huh? Realize that the producers sign off on most everything involved in a film and that the director answers to them. If you Think Jackson is just in it for the money at the end of the road, think again. He will have a death grip on whatever goes on with these movies.
to boot, you know he will more than likely get Barry Osborne or one of his other satellite directors who filmed portions of the LOTR trilogy to take the helm. They will know what Peter wants.
Interesting, but not unexpected as money talks & BS walks - We all heard they had until New Year’s to settle this or the rights reverted back to the original owner.
Two movies means that they will do The Hobbit proper in movie #1 & then movie #2 will ‘fill in the gaps’ between TH & TLOR’s - I read PJ say that somewhere a few months back……
As far as PJ & Fran Walsh’s history of ‘literary license’ goes, we can expect to see Smaug in The Battle Of Five Armies - MARK MY WORDS!
Killing him off beforehand would be too anti-climactic for them, gaureteed……
Well if PJ does decide to let someone else direct the two films then either Guillermo Del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron be given the jobs. Hell let one direct the Hobbit while the other direct the sequels.
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh please don’t srew this!!!!!!!! Make our dreams come true and let this be a worthy prequel to LotR…..and by the way:
PJ should direct…..HE HAS TO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HobbitHobbitHobbitHobbitHobbitHobbitHobbitHobbitHobbitHobbitHobbitHobbitHobbit
It’s great news that PJ is involved, and don’t be disheartend he’s not directing. He would not put his name to something he did not feel would be done as he did first time around simply a film masterpiece.
Hey Rigel S:
Anyone who thinks the 3 ‘PT’ Star Wars films are no good doesn’t know ’sheet’ about the Galaxy Far Far Away……
BUT, I realize I was there when the original ‘Star Wars’ came out in 1977, before it was called ‘A New Hope’, so I’m a huge nerd and am probably talking to a bunch of teenagers who think Peter Jackson invented Middle Earth…… :^)
yes!!!!
ty, ty, ty!!!!
Oh so long to wait!!!
At last Bob Shaye got over his madness! Let the filming begin! Free beer this weekend at the Prancing Pony!
I am GEEKING OUT right now!!!!!!!!!!
SOOOO EXCITED!!!
I couldnt imagine anyone else but Peter and Fran doing these movies. I kept hoping they would mend their differences. Cant wait to see who they can get to reprise their roles.
For the past year and a half, Harry Sloan’s been the voice of reason. MGM has wisely always supported Peter. Sloan now says that Peter could change his mind about solely EPing. Bob Shaye’s apparently still trying to get over himself. Anyway, I’ll wait as long as it takes for Peter to write it, direct it, whatever. Release date in 2012? So what? I’m not really interested in seeing anyone else’s vision.
I am so glad to here that PJ is back in for The Hobbit. Noone can do anything relaed to Middle Earth beter than him!
Also, I see that he is only the Producer as of now, why not make him director as well? He directed the Trilogy and it made 3 Billion worldwide. It would be foolish not to have him direct it as well.
So please let Peter direct it as well as produce it for it wont be the same with someone else directing it. I beg of you to listen to this plea and let PJ also DIRECT!!!!!!
This is great! The best part for me though is that my son will be 5 when the first film is released. I already made it a point for to read him the Hobbit and the LOTR for bedtime during the summer (sans decapitations and the like).
Can’t wait, can’t wait… CAN’T WAIT!
I really hope Alfonso Cuaron won’t have anything to do with these movies. He’s a good director in his own element, but I loathed what he did with Prisoner of Azkaban.
OTOH, if they can get the director that did Chronicles of Narnia, that would be great.
As for writing, I’m really hoping for Fran and Phillippa to do the scripts. They might not have kept strictly to the text on LotR, but they got the feeling nicely.
Peter Jackson must direct these films because we wantss it - please stop giving them ideas about alternative directors (and yes, we know there were satellite directors during LOTR but PJ was there and hands on, not spread over other film projects like he will be this time with Tintin etc). In other words, I think we need to make it loud and clear to PJ and the studios that PJ must direct these films and be a “hands on” director with them. There are lots of other good directors around but none will be suitable for this project other than PJ (perhaps we should start a “postpone Tintin” campaign to make them see sense). Also, can we get a LOTR High Def campaign happening now that NewLine and PJ have resolved their differences - we wantss to see Middle Earth in High Def asap.
Great News!!! IMO (for what its worth) they should go right back and do the Fall of Gondolin and Tuor’s story. Whatever they do im sure it’ll be great no matter what.
Great news! Having read the first book at 11 and the trilogy at 14, I’ve been a long-time fan of Tolkien, and HATED the attempts to make 2 hour cartoons to introduce the kiddies to the story! I was truly impressed with the treatment LOTR got, and am eagerly looking forward to “The Hobbit”. Thanks for settling your differences and giving me something more to look forward to!!!
Blessed be!
AT LAST!!!!! I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOREVER!!!!! i hope they include Dol-Guldur in Mirkwood!!! but GJ P.J.!!! can’t do it without him!
sorry for leaving 2 messages…. anyway i really think Peter Jackson should do it if they get too many different people into directing it… then they will have conflicting themes….etc… and it will be totally destroyed…. ultimately PETER JACKSON NEEDS TO DIRECT THE HOBBIT!!!!!
Quick note, Kasdan did not direct Empire Stikes Back, he just punched up Lucas’ script. Irvin Kershner was the director. And you call yourselves geeks, sheesh.
That being said, I am in JOY mode. Been humming that bit Gandalf does at the beginning of FOTR since yesterday.
This is brilliant news and I’m glad that PJ and new Line have settled everything! Can’t wait!
Very anxious to “experience” the Hobbit the Jackson way…
una felicitacion desde méxico para mgm, new line y a su majestad Peter Jackson, ansioso de ver an accion de nuevo a gandalf, bilbo gollum y cia. y en espera de conocer a smaug, beorn y demas integrantes de esta aventura epica.
gracias
This is incredible great news.
Two companies producing a great story like “the Hobbit”. This going to be special, i can’t wait to see it.
Thanks for this grat news!
the only thing ist…
We want Peter as the director… even if this means, that we need to wait longer!
merry x-mas to ya’all
I LOVE YOU BILBO! AAHHHH! Now my life is complete.
I can’t wait until I’m watching the extended version of The Hobbit and I’m watching the video of the reuniting of the actors in their roles as Gandalf, Bilbo and more. I may in fact be crying. I am sure that Elijah Wood, Sean Astin and the others will be making a cameo appearance in The Hobbit and a larger role in the bridge film.
There and Back Again Indeed……..We’re Back Again!
J.M. Prater
AWESOME NEWS!
Look Fwd to it
And the More Dwarfs the Better!!!
The Battle of the 5 Armies, Trolls, The changling ‘Bear Man’
they got so much to work with!
Can’t wait, can’t wait, can’t wait!
Any idea how they are going to be split up, or even how they will name the two movies yet I wonder?
Great news!!!! I´m so exited for these notice!!
merry x-mas and a happy new year!
For so long we have waited and finally it has come true…this is the best news I could have recieved.
THIS WILL BE A DAY TO REMEMBER!!
2008…the year of THE HOBBIT
This is the best news I’ve had since I first heard about Lord of the Rings being made
The next best news after that would be the assurance that Weta digital/workshop, Alan Lee, John Howe, Howard Shore, Ian McKellan, Hugo Weaving, Andy Serkis, Philippa Boyd (she and Fran [and possibly Pete!] have to write the script, of course!) all will be involved.
And of course the best news after THAT would be to hear that Peter Jackson, is in fact, directing.
Well, start the countdown! Three more years to go!
We can only hope Jackson doesn’t mangle this as badly as LotR. The announcements don’t look promising… sequel???
If he even manages to equal the 1977 Rankin-Bass TV special, I’ll be extremely surprised.
Oh please oh please, please, let this not be a HIDEOUS disappointment! At age 10 I was subjected to the first several minutes of the animated version (by which point I had asked so vehemently to be excused as to be a nuisance - I was excused). I was so repulsed that 23 years later I was DRAGGED out to see the cinematic version of FotR -literally, I went under half-serious threat and coercion several weeks after its release, as my friends knew of my great love of Tolkien, and that I had sworn never to see another film adaptation - I was fully prepared to walk out, and they agreed to let me. Well, I didn’t walk. The Jackson LotR films were painfully beautiful; wonderful artistic works, in spite of LARGE departures from the book. As those managed not ruin LotR for me, I will try to have faith… but I cannot imagine a children’s story working on film in at all the same way that LotR did, and Jackson is not exactly known for his subtle treatment of whimsy-! If it seems to have come off, I will even pay for my own ticket this time (lol) - but it is not a guaranteed purchase. To this day I have not seen the animated LotR of 1979. It is a great burden to re-format a classic loved by millions of all ages, and I respect Jackson and Walsh etc. for their courage in taking it on… but I’m feeling the need to go hug one of my copies of The Hobbit now…
-skwishmi, who desires dragons
Oh wow! Now I have to book another trip to New Zealand. Hope they rebuild Hobbiton in Matamata. Happy New Year!
I am so psyched at the thought of journeying to middle earth again soon!! Thank God it’s Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh leading the team. It would have SUCKED if they weren’t a part of it. In the meantime, many of us fans are biding our time by playing video games. One of my new favorites is Lego Star Wars the Complete Saga.
Lego Star Wars is great, and on the horizon, Lego: Indiana Jones is going to be great! However, a HUGE fan base is out there for Lord of the Rings, and yet, we have no Lego: Lord of the Rings. Developers, with The Hobbit FINALLY being helmed by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, please give us what we want and take us back through Middle Earth lego style. I can’t believe I haven’t seen anything for this yet online. This is a fabulous idea, and I can TOTALLY see us going through Middle Earth with the Lego brand of video game fun.
Instead of the Cantina spaceport in Mos Eisley, make the “home base” with the Elves and the High Council of Elrond. Then, send Bilbo and Frodo and the gang on the quest for the ring and for the ultimate quest to throw it in the volcano of Mount Doom. Along the way, let us relive the great parts of the books and the films and if you REALLY want to make fans happy, go ahead and add in elements from the history of Middle Earth, such as found in the Silmarillion.
Lego Gandalf and Lego Saurumon would be hilarious! Lego hobbits and dwarves could be modeled after Lego ewoks. I can’t wait!!
If you agree, please post your thoughts and agree in your reply so we can show the developers the interest here.
yay!! if only it could come out sooner! ive been watching lotr just about every month and am an avid fan of peter and fran’s work. kudos!!! and i cant wait!
When I first heard that LotR was being made into live action films I was more than a little nervous. I remember the 1979 movie, and how massively dissappointing that was. Now, having watched the three LotR movies, I’ve got complete confidence in the Jackson/Walsh/WETA combinaton.
Not that I’m not going to watch the movie website like a certified lunatic. . . . After all, I hadn’t been introduced to the Internet much before Fellowship came out and my kids had to guide me through the systems for the next couple of year. I’m eager to see The Hobbit developing before my eyes
Blessings
I’m so excited about the movie. I’m happy that Jackson is not directing it because he changed the characters in The Lord of the Rings. personally think that Sam Raimi should direct The Hobbit.
Commenting on the director position, I surely hope that G. del Torro DOES NOT direct. I recently read an article quoting him that said he had he read The Hobbit, but he couldn’t finish ‘The Lord of The Rings’ because “it was too dense”… In my opinion anyone who can’t read the LotR volumes couldn’t possibly direct the Hobbit at all closely to the book.
P.S. A very happy bithday to my favorite Author, John Ronald Ruel Tolkien
I am Very excited
It hits the cinemas in 2009 or 2010 ?
I CANT WAIT!!
“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit…”
awesome! i cant wait for the movie!
WOW! Only just seen this. Been watching the LOTR extended DVDs loads recently. Ridiculously excited now. Two films, too! Gonna be amazing xxx
It will be important to keep to the same pace, volume, character enhancement and horror of the LOTR Movies. Say what you want, we all fell in love with the Bad-Ass Legolas and Blue-Collar Aragorn because of thier “Super-Hero” presence on screen. More of the same is needed and will be used this time. LOTR wasn’t afraid to scare little kids, and challenge the patience of adults. These movies will NOT be chained to the substance of the Book. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the second movie completely free of any pre-ordained script, and used as a Stage for PJ to flex his own creative muscle. BRING IT ON.
hey!!! what a good idea MGM productions!!
and you, mr. Peter Jackson must be the director of that
hobbit movies. Wow! im a great fan of the lord of the rings and a great fan of you peter J. I want to know youXD jajaja! so.. good luck whit the proyect.
Come on Peter you can do it!! there’s no one else!
Have only just found out. OMG totally excited, especially as I will be in NZ next year!!!!!
2010 i get graduated but that is not a great thing at all…
2010 i see the hobbit movie? that AMAZING NEWS!!
I am elated, and more than elated, about this news. I am already counting the days until 2010, for myself, for my children, and a host of friends and relatives!
I am thrilled that Peter and the entire team that with him did such wonders with LOTR will be involved. That said, I am not too worried about him not directing. He did many things wonderfully in LOTR, but he also botched some things, from diminishing much of Gandalf’s magic (which plays a major role in several key hobbit scenes), to Galadriel not giving the paragraph explanation to her “Footsteps of Doom” statement, to the garbled scene of Denthors passing (and the lie of The Witch King breaking Gandalf’s staff. . . arggh”
I think the Extended FOTR is in the top 3 for best film EVER made, but I have never again watched Extended ROTK since the first time because of that mess with Gandalf and The Nazgul Lord.
I think that many who insist no one but Peter can direct have forgotten the mistakes, or else were film fans first and novel fans after. All that said, Peter did a very impressive job, and I am very happy that his guidance will be helping to steer this project, whoever directs.
What should be in film two??? More Glorfindel!, The Council, Gandalf’s battle with The Nine on Amon Sul should be worked in, with all its “light and Flame” (perhaps they persue him from Dol Guldur. . . his infiltration of which must DEFINITELY be included), the attack on Dol Guldur, and maybe Balin in Moria. . . with a commanding Balrog, in all his malice and sorcerous might as a Captain of Melkor, replacing the nameless goblin who shoots from a stones shade!!!
As to actors, Thrilled Ian Mckellen will all but certainly be returning, along with Hugo Weaving and Serkis. I’d love to see David Bowie as Thranduil, for many reasons (one being he seems born for the role) .
I’d love to see Lawrence Fishburne for Beorne, because he has the perfect voice and the bearing, and adds an ethnic diversity to the films that LOTR was sometimes understandably critisized for lacking.
Jude Law would make a great Glorfindel.
Lastly, MAKE SURE GANDALF”S BRILLIANT BLUE FLAME WIZARDRY IS involved just as in the book. Don’t let Rankin Bass get it more accurate than New Line! And Keep his beard as long, and full as possible. If Peter Weiss and Peter King don’t like long beards, tell them not to wear them, but leave Gandalf’s where it belongs, and as Tolkien describes it. . . from his face to his waist. Respect it like you would that of a dwarf.
Ahh. I see some of my TORN family here. They will recognize my words, I think, but if its news to you, I’ve done my part. : - )
I am so excited that New Line settled withe Peter and he is now at the helm of the Hobbit. It wouldn’t have been the same without his magical touch.
Ah, it is PETER OWEN, not Weiss, whom I am irrate with over the excessive beard trimming.
Its great that the heart of Tolkien can live on. Its a story that will never go old or boring !.
Hello to you all. I love lord of the rings and am a big follwer of gandulf.
wow!! fantastic news.. i really hope pete will be directing both of them, other wise i dont think it will be worth seeing.
WOW! I STILL CANT BELIEVE THE NEWS, I REALLY CANOT WAIT FOR THIS TO HAPPEN, ALTHOUGH IM NOT SURE OR CERTAIN WHO WILL DIRECT IT?
THERE ARE A LOT OF RUMOURS ON FACEBOOK THAT PETER WONT BE DIRECTING….THAT WOULD BE AWFUL IF SOMEONE ELSE DOES THE PROJECT……
NO DISRESPECT TO THE PERSON WHO IS NOMINATED, BUT I WOULD RATHER SEE PETER, WHO IS THE EXPERT IN THIS FIELD..
HE DID A FANTASTIC JOB WITH THE TRILOGY, AND SO IT WOULDNT MAKE SENSE……..
ANYWAYS NO SLEEP UNTILL THE DAY……………CHEERS TO ALL THE FANS OUT THERE…………………..
the Lord of the Rings - book and movie change my life.
It’s great that New Line going tomake the Hobbit!
Finally on iesb, there is an almost official announcement, Del Toro will direct both movies, he will sign the contract just after writer strike will be end.
Jackson executive producer and Del Toro on director’s chair! Great News!!!
right now i hope for the same actor of LOTR confirmation!!!
omg i can’t waiit when is it out?
x
It’s only like, the best story ever!!! I’m sooo excited about the movie!
thank you this maens the complet series is complet
Ok, now…where can I apply for acting as …
Beorn, my favorite role.
I would even play a fish in Gollums cave if necessary.
What, you are laughing at me? May Illuvatar burn yor souls.
It’s about time they got to this!! I only hope that they
Follow the book to the letter
I was very happy to learn that PJ and New Line worked out all of their issues. They need to get filming (and finish it) soon. When do the US rights return to Saul Saenz anyway.
I hope that they aren’t forced to cut out Beorn due to constraints of time.
I agree with the person who asked that PJ shoot the “Scouring of the Shire”. It can be released as an “extra” when the Hobbit comes out on dvd.
I admit, it would be difficult, but Peter Jackson and New Line should attempt to tackle The Silmarillion. Now, it sounds impossible, and obviously you can’t shoot it exactly how it’s written, but that’s ok, any movie about The Silmarillion would be awesome. In fact, you would probably need to make several movies, maybe even a TV Series. Actually, forget the TV series, that would be hokie and Tolkien would be like, “Don’t even think about it, are you crazy.” Yea, I admit, that was a lame idea. But movies, I say, do it, because they would be epic, I mean, come on, after LOTR and now The Hobbit, Us fans love this mythology!!!!!
Oh yea, and let me lay down all of the musts for the Hobbit movie, (which if done right is going to be so cool, simply put, so cool, so amazing). Ok, here they all are:
MOST IMPORTANT: PETER JACKSON, I’M SORRY, IT JUST HAS TO BE THAT WAY. Here’s a good analogy, not having PJ would be like making LOTR with everybody having machine guns, you would see it and be like,”OMG, this is a joke, right?” Ok, here’s the rest of the list: Ian Mckellen, Ian Holm, (if possible, I mean, I’m not sure it would work, I hope it will, but if it doesn’t, cast somebody who looks just like him.) Andy Serkis, Beorn, and just simply everybody who was involved in making LOTR, because you guys rock and did such an amazing job on the movies, honestly, you did, you just 100 percent made middle-earth exactly perfect to fit everyone’s imagination, if anyone out there wants to be stubborn and be like,”Oh, they didn’t make LOTR how I see it, it could of been so much better,” I just don’t understand you and no else does either, and you are just simply wrong. (these people make up about 1% of the Tolkien population, but they are out there.) To end, I say that the people that made LOTR need to make the Hobbit is because the movies need to have that same feel, and if they don’t, then we are going to feel like there is something missing, and walk out of the theatre and be like, “That just wasn’t the same as LOTR,” and that just isn’t necessary because it can easily be made by the same people, (at least I think it is, somebody correct me if I’m wrong) I mean, come on, I bet those wonderful people would love to work together again, at least that’s the impression I get from watching the Appendices discs of LOTR. (sorry this comment is so long.)
Thank you!!!than you!!!
This is so magical!!!
