From Wired:  James Daily, a lawyer and co-author of The Law and Superheroes, typically focuses his legal critiques on the superhero world at the Law and the Multiverse website he runs with fellow lawyer and co-author Ryan Davidson. Today, Daily takes a look a very important cultural document for Wired: The contract between Bilbo Baggins and the dwarves in The Hobbit.

Read the article here.

  1. LOTR nerd :) says:

    Interesting :)

  2. This article attests to the attention to detail the studio put into The Hobbit, considering how the contract was just a tiny piece in the story. I think all these subtleties really added to the experience!

  3. lil' bilbo says:

The overall technicality of this movie was mind-blowing! The specific aspects of The Hobbit really makes it a work of art, and the minute details (like the contract) are really what makes the movie amazing!

  4. Haha! Oh wow, this is interesting.

    • Izzy the LOTR fan says:

PEOPLE DONT LISTEN TO ALEX ITS SOOOOO NOT TRUE AND IF HE DIDNT LIKE THE HOBBIT WHY DID HE COME TO THE WEBPAGE SORRY PEOPLE THE HOBBIT IS AMAZING IF IT WASNT FOR THIS CREATION MY IMAGINATION WOULD BE DEAD I GOT AN A+ IN MY ENGLISH BECAUSE OF IMAGINATION ALL THANKS TO THE HOBBIT AND LOTR AND TOLKIEN AND PETER JACKSON AND THE WHOLE OF THE CREW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Er… I don’t think anyone listened to that guy. No need to caps-lock all over the floor over it.

        • Warner Bros Bummer says:

Big LOTR & Tolkien fan. Grown up gal in my 50′s. Was happy with Hobbitt, UNTIL, right at the end, got slammed with some anti-smoking propaganda that I PAID for today? I didn’t expect OR ask for this blather. Drugs kill. People kill. Whatever. Warner Bros took advantage with no notice of this affront to the PAYING public. They suck. NOT cool. God help Peter Jackson if he ok’ed this….This absolutely sucks and put me off to the point where I won’t see another of your films because I don’t need to be cold-cocked by someone else’s “message”. Get it? Someone adult comment please? Don’t victimize your public OR your fan base.

  5. ooohhh grate!!! fantastic and interesting News!.

    • alex fargo says:

This movie lacked any imagination whatsoever, so they have to go to this stupidity.

Let’s see, one dwalin looked like a clingon, Balin sounded and looked like an old rabbi, the goblin king looked like a ball-chinnion from men in black 2, and Azog looked like Shrek’s evil cousin.

The reluctant hero bit of bilbo, and the not worthy to be with us nonsense was re-used from a host of better movies, where it was done well.

Oh by the way, gollum is out of lines if you follow the plot. He should not show up again.

      • Whats wrong with you? You think you are so smart and oryginal? First of all you don’t know anything about book and you are talking nonesense. Stop trolling!

      • Glorfindel's daughter says:

Oh, gosh. You are the one with no imagination. Azog looked nothing like Shrek, Dwalin is so not clingon, besides, clingons are more hispanic looking, just because he is buff, doesn’t mean he is clingon. You do realize that they did Bilbo just like Tolkien intended him to be when writing the Hobbit? The Goblin King looked like, well, a goblin king. You can’t go in thinking he is going to be gorgeous!!! And Gollum wasn’t out of line, you are just about to cross it though!!

      • LOTRisawesome says:

What is wrong with you? The Hobbit and LOTR are the best books and movies I have read and watched, and if you’re gonna slag off Peter Jackson and all of the crew and Tolkien’s work, go somewhere else. Why come to the Hobbit website if you don’t like it???

      • Rosie Cotton says:

        Amin feuya ten’ lle.
thats elvish for ou disgust me.

  6. Hi friend;-);-)
    سلام

  7. Do you know any hobbit recipe???? I do! Incredible! http://polloala.com/2013/01/15/recetas-destacadas/sopa-de-pollo-y-canela/ so weird. I can`t believe it is true.

  8. yup, the movie was very good. this big companies are willing to make another sequel in December 2013

  9. wow that is very detailed, I wonder if Golum has one too.
Im soo looking forward to the sequels.

  12. Dwalin guy says:

when come’s the trailer of the desolation of smaug

    • well due to production working hard editing, adding effects and what else they do to make the next film just as good i’m sure it could be quite possible they might have had a call back for the actors for some other scenes since we all know Peter Jackson is very extensive with his films. I would assume sometime in the spring or this summer.

  13. @alex fargo

“Let’s see, one dwalin looked like a clingon, Balin sounded and looked like an old rabbi, the goblin king looked like a ball-chinnion from men in black 2, and Azog looked like Shrek’s evil cousin.”

Excuse me but if you are talking about Dwalin and Balin, you should really watch again Star Trek and meet one rabbi in you real life. Its rubbish.

    • Glorfindel's daughter says:

I’m glad someone agrees with me! BTW this is a Fantasy movie, Star Trek is sci-fi, I would love it if we could keep them APART!!!! They did that with Star wars, and that is falling flat, LotR will live on forever if we keep it pure (What am I saying????)

      • First of all Hobbit book is sometimes far to simple (its book for kids), Thorin death is way to flat, so Peter should change a lot to make whole story a lot better.

        • Glorfindel's daughter says:

No he shouldn’t!!!!!!!! OMG HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT IT’S A CHILDREN’S BOOK TOLKIEN WOULD SMITE YOU UPSIDE YOUR NARROW-MINDED HEAD!!!!! Orc In Hiding anyone??????

          • Well actually I think Tolkien said he wrote it for children, but I think it’s definitely a book everyone should read.

          • Glorfindel's Daughter says:

I know for a fact that he did not, whenever I pick up a Tolkien biography from the library, a different one each time mind you, they always talk about how whenever a critic said that it was a delightful children’s book, Tolkien was upset because he wrote it for everyone to read, not just children, I believe this is why the trilogy was so different than the Hobbit, just the same I don’t understand why people won’t let their 7 year olds read the Hobbit and yet let them read the Twilight series (blech) or the hunger games, I do enjoy the hunger games but it is definitely too violent for 2nd graders in my opinion!

  14. Drunken Elf says:

C’mon, Peter! It’s been almost a month since the movie came out! Give us another production video!

    • Glorfindel's daughter says:

      1. It’s been two months and the movie is still in theatres where I live, and 2. You are absolutely correct!!!!

  15. POST SOMETHING NEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Milo Boggy-Hillocks says:

What are you taking a vacation or something PJ?!!
we all want new stuff here, every time I come to see if there is new stuff (nearly every day) I’m disappointed, new videos please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. I love this, I think all Bilbos’ demands should be met. Really looking forward to the next movie.

  18. OH NO!!! I just found out that the last movie was moved to be released in December instead of July! I was looking forward to not having to wait a full year from the 2nd to the last!

    • Glorfindel's Daughter says:

I know, the bigger horror is that it will have to compete with the 2nd hunger games movie, I think they switched the release date of the HG movie so that they could uproot the hype over the hobbit. It isn’t working i think, the hobbit has a wider fan base, which I’m glad about!!! :D

  19. Robert N. says:

All the details of the contract? Where are all the dwarf women and kids or did they take them into the battle? Shouldn’t they be trying to protect what is left and just settle a contract with the hated elf to save and rebuild?
